What worked for me with lower back pain

I've had lower back pain for a very long time. At least 10 years. I've taken muscle relaxants and other drugs to try and stop the pain. But I've found two things have helped the most for me.
Walking - Seriously. Just walk more often than ride. It doesn't have to be fast. Take it easy if you need to. But it helps strengthen the lower back muscles.
I don't know what to call this exercise someone told me about. You can probably call it knee to chest stretch.
What you do is lay flat on the floor. Lift one leg, and bring the knee up to your chest. Hold it there for approximately 10-20 seconds. Repeat this with the other leg. Do this every day for 10 minutes at least twice during the day. It will stretch the lower back muscles.
